Biology & identification

Medium-sized, dull brown, unbanded mosquitoes. Unlike container Aedes, Culex lay eggs in floating rafts on the surface of stagnant, organically polluted water — storm-water catch basins, clogged ditches, neglected swimming pools, septic seeps, rain barrels, and other "dirty water" sites.

This makes their breeding harder to eliminate by simple tip-and-toss — it is often public or infrastructure water, not a backyard saucer. Culex pipiens dominates in cooler northern climates; Cx. quinquefasciatus (southern house mosquito) in the warm South; Cx. tarsalis is a key West Nile vector in the West.

Adults overwinter as mated females in sheltered sites.

Why it bites — host-seeking

Females need blood for eggs. Culex are ornithophilic-to-mammalophilic — they feed heavily on birds (amplifying West Nile virus in bird populations) and then shift to mammals, including humans, later in the season.

This bird-then-mammal "bridge" behavior is exactly what makes Culex the key West Nile bridge vector. They orient strongly to CO₂ and skin odor in low light.
