Do citronella candles work against mosquitoes?

Barely, and not in a way that protects you. Lab studies show citronella oil has a weak, short-range repellent effect, but an open candle flame also throws off CO₂ and heat — the exact cues that draw mosquitoes in. Sitting next to one does far less than the marketing implies.

Why it doesn't work

A citronella candle works on two ideas, and they fight each other. The first is that citronella oil — distilled from Cymbopogon grasses — masks or repels. The second, unstated, is that the candle is otherwise inert. It is not: an open flame consumes oxygen and emits carbon dioxide, heat, and water vapor, which is the exact signature of a breathing mammal that host-seeking female mosquitoes fly toward. You are running a small attractant in the middle of your repellent.

The repellent side is also weak in the open air. Citronella's active terpenes (citronellal, geraniol) are genuinely repellent at the skin, but they are highly volatile and evaporate within minutes, and a candle disperses only a faint, drifting concentration that any breeze destroys. Controlled comparisons of area repellents consistently find candles deliver little to no protection beyond a few inches of still air. Fradin & Day's NEJM study of repellents found plant-oil products gave protection measured in minutes, not hours, even applied directly to skin — and a candle is vastly more dilute than skin application.

The CDC and EPA position is consistent: skin-applied repellents work; ambient candles are not a reliable area protectant. The honest summary is that a citronella candle is pleasant ambiance whose net effect on a hungry Aedes or Culex is roughly neutral-to-slightly-attractive, because the CO₂ and heat it produces reach far further on the wind than the repellent terpenes do.

This is also why "just light more candles" backfires: more flames mean more CO₂ and heat, broadcasting a stronger host cue. If you want fewer bites at the table, the levers that actually work are a skin-applied EPA-registered repellent on people, eliminating breeding water, and — for yard-scale suppression — a CO₂ trap placed upwind and away from where you sit, so it pulls the females toward it instead of toward you.

Tiki torches: bigger flame, same physics

A tiki torch is a citronella candle scaled up, and scaling up makes the core problem worse, not better. The repellent terpenes don’t reach any further — they are just as volatile and just as easily swept away by wind. But the flame is larger, so it emits more carbon dioxide and more heat, the two longest-range cues a host-seeking female follows. The torch is a brighter beacon on the exact channel mosquitoes listen to. Lining a patio with torches can raise the ambient CO₂/thermal signature of the seating area, which is the opposite of what you want. Treat torch fuel marketed as "mosquito repellent" as ambiance, and put real repellent on skin instead.
