Do mosquito-repellent plants actually work?
Quick answer
No — a "mosquito-repellent" plant won’t protect you by growing in your yard. The aromatic oils that can repel mosquitoes are locked inside the leaves; they’re only released when the leaves are crushed and the oil is applied to skin. A citronella or lavender plant sitting on the patio does essentially nothing.
Why it doesn't work
The plants sold as mosquito repellents — citronella grass, the "citrosa"/"mosquito plant" scented geranium (Pelargonium), lavender, marigold, catnip, lemongrass — do contain genuinely bioactive compounds (citronellal, geraniol, linalool, nepetalactone). The marketing leap is assuming a living, intact plant releases those compounds into the air at a meaningful concentration. It does not.
These volatile oils are stored inside specialized structures — glandular trichomes and oil cells within the leaf tissue. An undisturbed plant keeps them locked away; only mechanical damage (crushing, tearing) or distillation ruptures those structures and liberates the oil. A geranium sitting in a pot emits a faint background scent that does nothing to a host-seeking female locked onto your CO₂ plume. Controlled tests of the "mosquito plant" geranium specifically have found no repellency from the intact plant. Even crushing leaves onto skin gives only brief, partial protection, because — as with citronella candles — the active terpenes are highly volatile and evaporate within minutes.
There's a second, quieter reason these plants don't create a protective zone: outdoor air movement. Any concentration a plant could plausibly release is diluted to nothing by the same breezes that carry your CO₂ and body-heat plume toward the mosquito. The cue you emit travels far; the cue the plant emits does not.
So the honest framing is: plant these because they're pleasant and pollinator-friendly, not as a barrier. Catnip oil and oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE / PMD) are genuinely effective as concentrated, skin-applied, EPA-registered repellents — but that is the extracted, formulated oil on your skin, not the shrub in the bed. Standing next to the shrub does nothing measurable to your bite count.
