Do mosquito foggers and bug bombs work?

Foggers and bug bombs do kill mosquitoes on contact — along with the bees, butterflies, dragonflies, fireflies, and spiders that share your yard. Because pyrethroid spray is indiscriminate, it wipes out the predators that naturally eat mosquitoes, and the survivors fly right back in from next door. You get a brief knock-down and a worse ecosystem.

Why it doesn't work

Barrier sprays and yard foggers apply broad-spectrum pyrethroid insecticides (bifenthrin, permethrin, deltamethrin) to foliage and air. They do kill adult mosquitoes on contact — but the claim being sold is lasting control, and that is where it fails biologically and ecologically.

First, it is indiscriminate. Pyrethroids are non-selective neurotoxins that kill any insect they contact: bees and other pollinators, butterflies, fireflies, dragonflies and damselflies (whose nymphs and adults are among the most effective natural mosquito predators), and the spiders and predatory beetles that eat mosquitoes. By removing mosquitoes’ natural enemies, broadcast spraying can produce a rebound — the survivors and the next generation flying in from outside the treated zone face less predation. Pyrethroids are also acutely toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, so drift and runoff carry the damage into waterways.

Second, it is temporary and untargeted. A fog knocks down the adults present at that moment, but the residue degrades in sun and rain over days, and mosquitoes are highly mobile — Aedes albopictus and Culex readily disperse hundreds of meters, so new females simply fly back in. Timer-driven misting systems make this worse by spraying on a clock whether or not mosquitoes are present, maximizing non-target kill and selection pressure.

Third, routine broadcast use drives insecticide resistance. Pyrethroid resistance via kdr sodium-channel mutations and metabolic detoxification is already widespread in Aedes aegypti and Culex populations worldwide; blanketing a yard every few weeks selects hard for the resistant survivors.

The contrast with attract-and-kill is the whole point of SkeeterSwitch's positioning. Timer-based misters: fogging on autopilot

Automatic misting systems are a network of nozzles plumbed around a yard that release a pyrethroid insecticide (often permethrin or a pyrethrin blend) on a fixed timer — typically a burst at dawn and dusk. They are fogging’s permanent installation, and they inherit every one of fogging’s problems while adding a few of their own.

The defining flaw is in the name: timer-based. The system sprays on a clock, not on the presence of mosquitoes — so the large majority of mist is released when no target is there, which maximizes non-target kill and selection pressure for the smallest possible mosquito benefit. Because the same compounds hit the same yard dozens of times a season, misting systems are an efficient engine for insecticide resistance. Public-health and mosquito-control bodies have specifically cautioned against residential misting systems: routine, calendar-based, broad-spectrum spraying is the opposite of integrated pest management, which says treat the source and the adult population on evidence of need, not the whole yard on a timer.
