Why it doesn't work

The single highest-leverage mosquito intervention is the one most people skip because they're looking for the wrong thing — a pond — when the actual nurseries are tiny, man-made, and right next to the patio. Aedes mosquitoes (aegypti and albopictus, the aggressive daytime biters) are container breeders. A female lays eggs just above the waterline of small artificial containers, and the eggs can survive dry for weeks to months, hatching the next time the container fills. The water volume required is startlingly small — a bottle cap, a plant saucer, a clogged gutter, a tarp fold, a kids' toy, a corrugated downspout, a birdbath, an old tire are all viable. Larvae complete development to biting adults in roughly 7–10 days in warm weather.

That biology has two consequences. First, big visible water (ponds, pools in use, moving streams) is usually the least of the problem — fish and circulation suppress larvae, and a chlorinated, filtered pool is hostile to them. The threats are the overlooked cryptic containers. Second, because Aedes breed within meters of where they bite and don’t disperse far, your bite problem is very often produced on your own property — which means you can break the cycle.

The intervention is free and beats any spray: walk the yard at least weekly and tip, toss, cover, or treat every container holding water. Weekly matters because it’s shorter than the larval development time — empty a container before larvae mature and you abort that generation. Clean gutters, drill drainage holes in anything that pools, change birdbath water, store toys and buckets upside down.
