Quick answer

Most backyard mosquito products don't work. An honest rundown of what actually cuts mosquitoes in a yard — and what to skip — without selling you a candle.

Short answer: only a few things meaningfully cut mosquitoes in a yard — dumping standing water every week, a CO₂ + heat trap that runs when mosquitoes are actually flying, and, for short windows, an EPA-registered skin repellent like DEET or picaridin. Almost everything else in the mosquito-control aisle — bug zappers, citronella candles, ultrasonic gadgets, “repellent” plants, bat houses — has been tested and failed. This guide sorts the handful of things that work from the long list that doesn’t, and tells you honestly where each one fits.

Start with the free fix: standing water

Before you buy anything, walk your yard once a week and tip out standing water. This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do, and it costs nothing.

Mosquitoes like Aedes aegypti — the species behind most backyard bites — can complete their entire life cycle in as little as a bottle cap of water. The breeding sites that matter aren’t ponds; they’re clogged gutters, plant saucers, kids’ toys, tarps, and the saucer under the grill cover. Find them, dump them, do it weekly.

The honest limit: this only controls the water you find on your property. It does nothing about adult mosquitoes flying in from a neighbor’s yard, and it won’t help much if you back onto woods or a retention pond. That’s the gap the next tools fill. What actually kills adult mosquitoes in a yard

Once you’ve handled breeding water, there are really only two categories that reduce the adult mosquitoes already flying: traps that pull them in and kill them, and sprays that poison the yard. They are very different trades.

CO₂ + heat traps (what we make a service around)

A CO₂ + heat trap mimics a breathing mammal. It releases a steady, slow stream of bottled CO₂ and a little warmth — the same exhaled-breath-and-body-heat signature a female mosquito follows to find a blood meal. Instead of finding you, she finds the trap.

Peer-reviewed field trials (Kline; USDA-ARS) show CO₂ + heat traps produce large reductions in mosquito landing rates for the species that bite people most — Aedes, Culex, and Anopheles — plus biting gnats (midges). Black flies host-seek the same CO₂-and-warmth signature, so they’re caught incidentally too. We dig into the mechanism on the science page.

Honest limits, stated plainly:

The recurring complaint with consumer CO₂ traps is that you have to remember to run them and refill them — and most people don’t, so the trap sits dark half the season. That gap is the entire reason SkeeterSwitch exists: a smart plug runs the trap only during host-seeking windows (right temperature, low enough wind), tracks running hours, and warns you before the tank runs dry. Barrier sprays and foggers (effective, with a real cost)

Pyrethroid barrier sprays — the kind a franchise technician applies, or a timer-based misting system runs — genuinely knock down mosquitoes. We’re not going to pretend they don’t.

The cost is what they kill on the way. Pyrethroids are broad-spectrum: they don’t distinguish a mosquito from a bee, a butterfly, a dragonfly, a firefly, or a spider. That includes the predators that eat mosquitoes, so the survivors fly back in from next door with less competition. You get a brief knock-down and a poorer yard ecosystem. Skin repellents (for you, not the yard)

EPA-registered repellents — DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus — work, and they’re the right tool when you’re in the yard. DEET alone has 65+ years of safety data. They protect skin for hours; they do nothing to the yard’s mosquito population. Think of them as the seatbelt, not the brakes. What doesn’t work (skip these)

This is most of the aisle. Every one of these has been tested:

If a product promises a mosquito-free yard with no spray, no hardware, and no effort, it’s on this list or headed for it.

How to actually build a working setup

Stack the things that work, in order of effort and cost:

  1. Weekly water dump. Free. Do this regardless of what else you buy.
  2. A CO₂ + heat trap that genuinely runs all season. This is the one that reduces the adult population without spraying — if it stays running and refilled. Automating that is the whole point of how SkeeterSwitch works.
  3. Skin repellent for when you’re out there. DEET or picaridin for the cookout; it’s the gap-filler.
  4. Reconsider spraying only if you specifically want a contractor to handle everything and you accept the ecosystem trade-off — and even then, read the comparison first.

Notice what’s not on the list: zappers, candles, gadgets, plants. Money spent there is money not spent on the two or three things that move the needle.

The honest bottom line

There’s no product that makes a yard mosquito-free with zero effort — anyone who tells you otherwise is selling the candle. What works is unglamorous: dump the water, run a real trap consistently, wear repellent when you’re out.
